According to a report in Dutch publication Voetbal International, Eredivisie giants Ajax could be forced to offload captain and star striker Luis Suarez as they attempt to raise funds to help solve their financial problems. The Uruguayan hitman has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona in recent weeks, although Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool have all seen themselves mooted as a possible destination for the 22-year-old.
Ajax have received over €100m from player sales in recent years with the likes of Ryan Babel, Thomas Vermaelen, Wesley Sneijder and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar have all leaving the Amsterdam Arena for both England and Spain. Despite the capital raised from such canny sales it is understood that successive managers including Ronald Koeman, Danny Blind, Henk Ten Cate, Marco van Basten and Martin Jol have spent in excess of €144m on new recruits without achieving much in the way of domestic or European success.
In an attempt to level the books it is believed that the Ajax hierarchy would accept the sale of Suarez should bids in the region of €35m be forthcoming. Suarez has been the star player of the Eredivisie this season, scoring 16 goals in 12 league appearances.
