Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano has spoken about the speculation linking him with a move to Barcelona which engulfed his summer but made clear that his mind is fully focused on a career at Anfield. The Argentinian international was a known target for the reigning European champions but was forced to stay on Merseyside by a bullish Rafael Benitez following the sale of Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid.
Reflecting on the transfer rumours, Mascherano made clear:
"Everyone knows Barcelona were interested in me but that's in the past now.
"Liverpool said no and that's the end of it. Some might say I haven't been playing well because Barcelona tried to buy me.
"I agree I haven't been at my best but it's not because of that. I just haven't started the season well."
