The Weekend Debate: Who is the EPLs greatest ever right back?
The former Nottingham Forest, West Ham and Manchester City legend Stuart Pearce has romped away with the left-back spot, but who can grab the right hand side. The Premier League can boast some brilliant right sided defenders over the years, but who is worthy of the greatest tag? Arsenal have had their fair share, starting with Gunners legend Lee Dixon, while his successor Lauren was an integral part of the Invincibles, but what of their current incumbent Bacary Sagna? Manchester United can boast Paul Parker, Gary Neville and Wes Brown, while Chelsea had Albert Ferrer and Mario Melchiot. Liverpool currently have England’s number one choice Glen Johnson, but credit must be given to West Ham, Chelsea and Portsmouth for his rise to prominence, while Steve Finnan had a good career at Anfield, as did Alvaro Arbeloa, but where would Jason McAteer and Rob Jones rank? Everton have either Phil Neville or Tony Hibbert currently, but where would Aston Villa and Goodison hero Earl Barrett fit into the equation? Gary Charles had his problems but in his pomp he was a fearsome proposition for Aston Villa, while ex-Charlton and Tottenham’s Luke Young is very much a steady Eddie character. Wimbledon and Newcastle United were fortunate enough to call on Warren Barton, while Leeds United had the legendary Gary Kelly. Southampton stalwart Jason Dodd was an excellent Premier League player, and the same could be said for Sheffield Wednesday star Roland Nilsson. Blackburn and West Ham had Lucas Neill, while Pascal Chimbonda shined at Wigan, but who is the best?
