Former Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Marseille striker Tony Cascarino is very surprised by Manchester United’s signing of Bordeaux winger Gabriel Obertan.

The ex-Republic of Ireland international has watched the 20-year-old on a number of occasions, but saw nothing to suggest he has the quality to make it at Manchester United.

Cascarino told footballpools.com: “Sir Alex Ferguson has claimed that Manchester United’s transfer window business is now over after the arrivals of Luis Antonio Valencia, Gabriel Obertan and Michael Owen but to be honest I don’t believe him.”

“United will still be pursuing targets as they need to strengthen further after losing two of their main men.”

“The signing of Obertan is a strange one, I watch a lot of French football and from what I’ve seen of him, he’s very hit and miss.”

“He was not a first team star at Bordeaux or on loan at Lorient last season so doubt he will have a major impact for United in the short-term.”

Tony Cascarino is a pundit for www.footballpools.com

'Fergie is trying to make him a better player. Fergie saw him as Thierry Henry replacement. He's just like Ronaldo before he enter Man Utd who like to run and dribble.. Same as Obertan, if he try his best, he will become a sensational footballer one day. Who knows he'll play just like Henry in the future. He has a great talent such as speed and like to dribble .. Think before you all talk especially to the rivals manager, Fergie knows what he'' doing.. Thant's the unique thing that Man Utd have. They make some average player to Star Player..'

'Ah yes! That well-respected football commentator, Tony Cascarino, has an opinion to offer. What's wrong Tony? Is your contract up for negotiation? '
