New Arsenal signing Thomas Vermaelen has revealed his ambitious side as he prepares for life at the Emirates. The £10m Belgian acquisition, who captained Ajax last season, is known for his strong leadership qualities and hopes that his experience in defence belies his young years.

He explained to the Daily Star Sunday, “If the trainer wants me to take responsibility, I will. If he sees I am the right person for it, I will take it.

“I am very young, this is a big club but I am used to the pressure.

“At Ajax, there was a lot of pressure and I think I am used to it now. This is a big step to a great club and we’ll see how it goes,” he concluded.
