Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been alerted by the availabilty of Everton's Joseph Yobo and Middlesbrough's David Wheater. The Frenchman has been linked with a host of defenders since admitting his summer transfer plans to shore up the Arsenal back line, including Bolton's Gary Cahill, Stoke City's Abdoulaye Faye, Newcastle's Sebastien Bassong, and Paris Saint Germain's Mamadou Sakho.

Wenger has been a long term admirer of Everton's Yobo who has reportedly turned down the offer of a new contract, and any option of seeing out his last 12 months. The Frenchman has tried to sign the 28-year-old Nigerian on a number of occassions in the past, but could face stiff competition from Manchester City.

Boro boss Gareth Southgate has come to terms with the inevitable summer sales if Middlesborough are relegated on Sunday with Tuncay, Robert Huth, Gary O'Neill and David Wheater all set to leave the Riverside to clear £90 million of debt. According to reports the North East club have slapped a £9 million asking price on the head of Wheater, which could  tempt Wenger who has spoken with Southgate previously about the young England defender's qualities. However, Wenger could face competition from Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill.
