Former Marseille and Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino claims that he is uninterested in talk of Arsenal’s potential and claimed that Arsene Wenger should focus on building a successful team for the present and not the future. Speaking exclusively to sport.co.uk, the legendary Irish international expounded on the problems at the Emirates:
"I am bored of the Arsenal potential. I get bored of listening to it because it is all about the present.
“If you ask any Arsenal fan today if they think they can challenge? The answer is no!
“People say to me if they get everybody fit they will challenge. But no manager can get everyone fit at any one time. You are very fortunate if you get your best eleven fit week in week out.
“Arsenal are very young and very small, I believe they should bring in a bit more experience. When he first joined the club he had a backline of Dixon, Winterburn, Bould, Keown, Seaman and Adams. That was the backbone of that team.”
Asked about the injuries suffered by Arsene Wenger’s squad which have taken their toll at vital moments of the season, Cascarino made clear that solid squad players are a necessity to cover for such eventualities.
“Manchester United didn't have Cristiano Ronaldo for the first six weeks of the season and they dealt without him.
“As a manager, sometimes you are going to lose your best players. It's a squad that wins you things as you all know. I don't imagine Arsenal having a Park, O'Shea or Fletcher - all experienced pros.
“Arsenal doesn’t have anyone like that. For me you have to have these types of players to win things.”
