Tony Cascarino, a football league veteran who played for Gillingham, Millwall, Aston Villa, Celtic and Chelsea, thinks that his former club should sell Didier Drogba and sign former Southampton, Tottenham, Liverpool and current Portsmouth striker Peter Crouch.
Speaking exclusively to Sport.co.uk, Cascarino said: “I think it is time to let him go (Drogba). He is thirty one years old now, his experience in the Champions League Final last year and his childish behaviour have let him down.”
“Then this year I think he has become more of a hindrance than a help. He is a great player when he is on song, but Chelsea fans didn't see Drogba until March. We can't go forward into next season, looking at Chelsea and thinking what sort of Drogba is going to turn up?”
When pressed to name a replacement, the former Republic of Ireland international said the following:
“There are always players available, players who can do you a job. I think how much Chelsea get for Drogba will determine where Chelsea go and look for a replacement.”
“Don't forget Anelka has done unbelievably well this year and I think it might be a case of taking a chance. Are Chelsea going to sign a David Villa? Probably not.”
''I think Ibrahimovic is an overrated player. The problem you have is the European leagues are weaker than the Premier League. That has been shown this year in the Champions League. Any forwards you go after, you have be confident that they will do well in the Premier League.”
“Abroad, I don't see that many great options for Chelsea. But I don't see the option of keeping Drogba. The worst scenario would be Chelsea having to keep Drogba.”
Cascarino suggested Chelsea may want to look within the Premier League for a replacement should Drogba leave the club.
He said: “I personally think Chelsea should go for Peter Crouch. I think he would do a great job for Chelsea the way they play. He is an honest lad and has a great goalscoring record at club level and with England.”
“He is a good footballer and I wouldn't look far beyond a player like him.”
