Fourth is most we deserve admits van Persie
Robin van Persie has admitted that Arsenal did not deserve to finish any higher than fourth this season. The Gunners have secured a Champions League place with two games to go, but cannot catch Chelsea in third after suffering an embarrassing 4-1 home defeat against their London rivals on Sunday. And Dutch striker van Persie is adamant their final position is an accurate reflection of what has been a disappointing campaign - and that Arsenal only have themselves to blame.
"If you look at the whole season, we were not consistent enough to get a higher place," he explained.
"If we are really honest, fourth place is how we have played this year because we lost too many games we should have won against the so-called smaller teams.
"Every team has a poor period where they lose some points, but we had two or three bad periods and we are to blame for that.
"I don't think we should have been second or third because in the end the table does not lie."
And van Persie is desperate for things to change quickly so that Arsenal can once again challenge for all the major honours.
"There is definitely big room for improvement - just look at our midfield which is 20 or 22 years old," he explained.
"The main thing is that we stick together because if you change three or four players every year it's difficult to get the spirit.
"But for me personally, I'd like to get some silverware and the earlier the better."
