Paul Scholes is set for a shock return to Manchester United's first team in Wednesday night's Carling Cup tie with Blackburn at Old Trafford. The midfielder hasn't played since injuring his knee in United's Champions League clash with Aalborg at the end of September. But the 34-year-old is likely to get his chance from the bench against Paul Ince's side as Sir Alex Ferguson looks to play his youngsters.

"Although we are now into the quarter-finals, I intend to stay with the young ones who have got us this far," Ferguson wrote in his programme notes ahead of the game.

"Players like Jonny Evans, Rafael, Darron Gibson, Rodrigo Possebon and Danny Welbeck [will all be involved].

"But I also have Paul Scholes in mind. He is on the verge of playing again following his knee injury and operation. He is training well and is chomping at the bit to get started.

"So a place on the bench with perhaps a few minutes' pitch time could be good for him. We'll see how things go."
