Sprint sensation Mark Cavendish was delighted after securing the green points jersey at the Vuelta a Espana.

The 25-year-old from the Isle of Man won three stages of the race to become only the second Briton to win the points jersey on one of the three major tours, with Malcolm Elliott having triumphed in Spain in 1989.

Cavendish said afterwards: "I didn't expect it when I came here, but I really am pleased that I managed to achieve my first green jersey in a major tour. It's something very special.

"The Vuelta is different from other races because there are equal points on offer in the mountains and in the flats, but at the end of the day it's all about being consistent.

"I'm very happy for HTC-Columbia all round. We took five stages, led overall and we got on the podium as well as the points. It has gone perfectly."

Cavendish has established himself as the leading sprinter in world cycling in recent times, winning an incredible 15 stages in the last three years of the Tour de France.
