Graeme Swann has been backed to smash England's all-time spinner's wicket-taking record, by the man who currently holds the honour.

Derek Underwood, who grabbed 297 Test wickets, believes Swann, who is in the running to win the International Cricket Council's World Player of the Year award, can knock him off the top of the list if he continues to progress as he has done.

Swann, a relative latecomer to the Test scene, made his debut at the age of 29, but broke the 100-wicket barrier during England's controversial recent series victory against Pakistan and Underwood feels he has every chance of beating his record haul.

Underwood is also looking forward to seeing him face up to Australia in this winter's Ashes series as England seek to retain the little urn.

"He has got a touch of class and a touch of quality about him," said Underwood. "He's the strike bowler in this attack, he's the one that has conjured up this element of danger for the batsmen - he just comes on and takes wickets.

"I'm sure that my record will go some day because there's just so much more Test cricket played. He's still got a lot of work to do but, if England get runs on the board and put the opposition under pressure, then he should certainly hurry along.

"It will be interesting to see how he fares in Australia. He came into Test cricket late but that could be the reason he's done so well - he's bowled the overs in the county game and is now a very experienced bowler.

"Personally, I loved bowling in Australia, especially in Sydney where you always get a bit of assistance for the slow bowlers. The key will be for England's batters to get runs on the board so that he can really attack the batsmen."
