Oscar De La Hoya has suggested American superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr would be willing to risk his unbeaten record against Amir Khan.
'Money' was expected to take on Khan's close friend and sparring partner, Filipino icon Manny Pacquaio, in what would have been the highest-grossing fight in years in March, but a row over drugs testing meant their blockbuster remains on the shelf.
Now, Khan has seen himself emerge as a contender fresh from his unanimous points win over the hard-hitting Marcos Maidana in a compelling defence of his WBA light-welterweight title.
Next up for the Bolton fighter in the 10 stone light-welterweight division is expected to be the winner of January's clash between WBO king Timothy Bradley and WBC and IBF champion Devon Alexander.
But, according to Khan's American promoter, De La Hoya, a move to 147 pounds opens the door for the 24-year-old at welterweight against pound-for-pound superstar Mayweather.
"You have Mayweather who wants to fight," said De La Hoya. "Amir wants to fight Mayweather.
"He wants to fight the very best, but obviously right now it's vacation time."
