South Africa's Caster Semenya is the latest major name to pull out of the Commonwealth Games.

The 19-year-old 800 metre world champion will not be competing in Delhi after citing a back problem for her late withdrawal.

Semenya returned to competitive action in July after almost 12 months on the sidelines following a series of high-profile gender tests.

"It would serve no purpose to have an athlete in Delhi who was struggling with any sort of injury that would compromise performance," explained team doctor Shuaib Manjra.

"It is our medical view that physically and emotionally she would not be capable of doing justice to her talent at an event of this magnitude."

Meanwhile, Team South Africa are still waiting on medical advice to see whether long jumper Khotso Mokoena and men's 800m world champion Mbulaeni Mulaudzi can compete.

Several leading international athletes have already pulled out of the upcoming games in India amid concerns over security and the state of the facilities in Delhi.
