Manchester United star Paul Scholes believes the emergence of Manchester City as one of their Premier League rivals is good for the North West, but suggests the last thing he and his Old Trafford teammates want to see is Roberto Mancini’s side leapfrog them next season.

Manchester City’s huge cash outlay on a glut of stars shows no signs of letting up, and although the evergreen 35-year-old admits they must now be taken very seriously, the midfielder suggests Manchester United remain as determined as ever to finish above them.

Scholes cheekily adds that it makes a “change from them being in the Second Division 10 years ago”.

The Manchester United talisman told the Daily Mail: “The last thing we want is City above us,

“It hasn't happened since I have been here.

“They have bought so many players but whether they can gel remains to be seen. It is great for the city to have two top teams - a change from them being in the Second Division 10 years ago.”
