Arsene Wenger has spoken about Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez and claimed that the Spaniard’s rise to the Premier League is proof that quality always rises to the top and that the Championship is a good breeding ground for young managerial talent. The Gunners face the Latics at the Emirates stadium on Saturday afternoon with Wenger desperate to get his side’s season back on track following defeats to Manchester City and Manchester United.
Speaking to Arsenal TV Online, Wenger spoke about Martinez’s ascent to a top flight coaching role:
“It shows you two things. First of all that there is not set way to come up to the Premier Legaue, everybody has a different one, but the quality rises to the top always.
“As well that the Championship can reveal some managers you know? Because they have a good opportunity to show that they have the quality.
Asked if he was a close associate of Martinez, Wenger regretfully admitted:
“I don’t know him personally, I know his name. I don’t know him at all.
However, the French coach did admit that the Spaniard’s implementation of attack-minded and stylish football was something that he admired:
“I believe when people have a positive philosophy that means they tend their players to express their talent. You always want that to be done by their managers.”
