Ralph Hasenhuttl Admits Southampton Will 'Learn' From Their Mistakes in Defeat Against Cardiff

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has admitted that his side's defensive errors meant that they did not deserve anything from their 1-0 defeat at Cardiff City.

Hasenhuttl's first game in charge of the Saints ended in disappointment after a glaring error from centre back Jannik Vestergaard allowed Callum Paterson to slot the winning goal past Alex McCarthy, stretching Southampton's winless run to 14 in all competitions.

“It is very hard to accept that we didn’t take a point but with these mistakes you don’t deserve it," Hasenhuttl said via the Daily Echo.

“It was a really tough game for us, a very physical game. I think we started well the first 15-20 minutes, we had good pressing situations, a few chances against a very physical team.

“It was not easy to find the right space, to find the last action, and the last action was not focused enough I think."

The Austrian coach has admitted that although his side lost, he will treat the game as more of a lesson than a defeat or a failure.

“I always said either we win or we learn and today we learned."

Hasenhuttl also told of the tough training sessions he made his players endure in the days before the game, but has suggested that the game came around a bit too soon for them to take effect.

“We had two good days of training, two hard days, but maybe it’s not enough at the moment."

Southampton's next game will see Hasenhuttl make his home debut in the dugout, as they face Arsenal at St Mary's next Saturday. It will prove to be another tough test, as Arsenal extended their unbeaten run to 21 games with a 1-0 victory over Huddersfield Town.
