Technical director James Allison leaves Ferrari

British technical director James Allison has left Ferrari in a joint decision, the team announced on Wednesday.

Allison moved to the the Italian constructor in 2013 following two successful years at Lotus. And after a winless 2014 campaign, he was instrumental in helping Ferrari return to the top step of the podium on three occasions last year.

Allison signed a new deal with Ferrari, which was expected to take him through to the end of the 2018 campaign, but ahead of the German Grand Prix - Formula One's final race before the summer break - it was announced that he would no longer serve the team.

A short statement read: "Ferrari announces that after three years of working together, Scuderia Ferrari and James Allison jointly decided to part ways."

Allison, whose wife Rebecca died suddenly in March after contracting bacterial meningitis, said: "During the years I spent at Ferrari, at two different stages and covering different roles, I could get to know and appreciate the value of the team and of the people, women and men, which are part of it.

"I want to thank them all for the great professional and human experience we shared. I wish everybody a happy future with lots of success."

Allison's departure will be seen as a great loss to Ferrari. The 48-year-old Cambridge graduate is likely to attract the interest of a number of Formula One's top teams in future seasons. At Ferrari he will be replaced by Mattia Binotto.

Ferrari team principal Maurizio Arrivabene, whose own future with the Italian team has come under scrutiny following a season in which they have so far failed to win, added: "The team would like to thank James for his commitment and sacrifice during the time spent together, and wishes him success and serenity for his future endeavours."
