Shane Byrne maintains British Superbike Championship lead after Cadwell Park win

Shane Byrne dramatically passed Leon Haslam on the last lap of the first race at Cadwell Park to help maintain his MCE British Superbike Championship lead.

Ducati rider Byrne, who won both races at Brands Hatch earlier in the month, looked evenly-matched with his title rival Haslam (Kawasaki) before edging ahead of him late on to take the chequered flag by two-tenths of a second.

Jason O'Halloran (Honda Racing), who temporarily led Byrne and Haslam, kept pace with the top two until the final few laps and held off the challenge of Suzuki's Tommy Bridewell to clinch third place.

It was the same three riders on the podium following the second race of the day in Lincolnshire as Haslam triumphed to make up for his earlier disappointment.

O'Halloran was narrowly behind in second, with Byrne forced to settle for third ahead of Peter Hickman (Kawasaki) and Bridewell.

The day's racing leaves Byrne at the top of the championship table on 272 points, although second-placed Haslam managed to gain four points on his rival and now sits 21 points behind with four meets remaining.

O'Halloran remains third, 61 points off the lead, and, along with Byrne and Haslam, has confirmed his place in the top six to qualify for the 2016 Showdown.
