Perez simply 'Stamping his authority' on F1

The Monaco Grand Prix proved to fans of Formula 1 that Sergio Perez is not afraid to try moves on world champions, even if it means ruining his race and others. The Mexican had already come under fire from team-mate Jenson Button after they made contact twice during the Bahrain Grand Prix. Again at Monaco, Button was on the radio to his team telling him to calm down.

Fernando Alonso said that "Only McLaren are happy with Perez."

"Really I don't want to make too much attention on this because the most important thing is that Felipe [Massa]'s good [after a heavy crash] and the second most important thing is [Nico] Rosberg that won the race," Alonso was quoted as saying by Sky Sports F1.

"Then with Perez he has the car parked in the Rascasse - that is the only point that you can say.

"He was lucky this year in two or three incidents. In Bahrain nearly contact with Jenson, with me I was off the track avoiding contact. Here at the chicane I avoided contact again, but Kimi was not lucky because he didn't avoid the contact. But only McLaren has to be happy with him."

Only lap 73 Perez tried a daring move on Raikkonen into the Nouvelle chicane which didn't pay off after the two made contact. Perez's front wing being damaged beyond use and Raikkonen getting a puncture one lap later.

The Finn finished in 10th which, at first seemed impossible with just three laps remaining and his record of successive points finishes goes on, almost beating the record of Michael Schumacher's.

All though he got into the points, Lotus team principal Eric Boullier was not happy with Perez's driving.

"He tried once and if you look at the video he was attempting very, very late braking misunderstanding the braking line of Kimi. I think that was a little bit too much," Boullier told reporters.

"He nearly crashed with his team-mate in Bahrain, here there was also a little bit of action. It looks like he's trying to often to be too aggressive and attempt something which is most of the time impossible to do."

McLaren's sporting director has said that Sergio Perez is simply 'Stamping his authority' on the sport."It's always a balance," he told BBC Sport. "Ultimately you want him to be able to race and push as hard as he can. It's not a lot different to how some of the great racers of the last 20 years have driven.

"You are playing a numbers game but I'd rather he did that than be criticised for sitting there when he could have had a go. He's stamping his authority on the sport and showing he has the ability to do that. It's not always going to come off, just as it hasn't with other people.

"Of course you can argue he lost a fifth place, but once he'd committed to that move, Kimi threw it away as well as him. Kimi always had the option to turn away from the corner."nd says the entire team is behind him.
