Former racing driver and Formula 1 team owner Guy Ligier has died at the age of 85.

Ligier, who had a varied career that involved working as a butcher and in construction before turning to motorsport, made his F1 debut aged 35 at the 1966 Monaco Grand Prix.

He made 12 Grand Prix appearances and then moved into construction, buying his own team in 1974 when he purchased Matra Sports.

The team would take Ligier's name and competed through to 1996, but his involvement ended in 1992. Ligier won nine times during that time.

McLaren racing director Eric Boullier said: "It was with great sadness that I heard the news that Guy Ligier had passed away.

"Guy himself was a tough and uncompromising character, but he was also a racer through and through."
