Lewis Hamilton wins as Mercedes and Ferrari power on

Lewis Hamilton cruised to a relatively easy win in the Bahrain Grand Prix ahead of Kimi Raikkonen and teammate Nico Rosberg and Valtteri Bottas who seemed to pop up from nowhere. Sebastian Vettel found himself in fifth after a rather indifferent race.

Hamilton had a bit of a quiet race with no notable drama from starting in pole and finishing in the same position. The surprise of the day was probably Kimi’s late surge which saw him manage to fend off Nico Rosberg in a Ferrari that looks set to seriously challenge Mercedes this year. Valtteri Bottas was able to take full advantage of Sebastian Vettel’s failure to stay on the track in the final stages of the race and the damage of a wing ensured the German would come out of the pits behind Bottas.

Fernando Alonso claimed to have fulfilled the ultimate objective of the weekend though only finishing in 11th which actually happens to be his highest finish since re-joining McLaren. It does seem as if his move has turned his fortunes for the worse. However, he could be considered lucky as his teammate Jenson Button could not even start the race due to problems with his car. Hopefully those problems can be rectified over the impending break.

The season seems to be playing out mostly as expected with the prospect of Vettel and Hamilton battling for the title a prospect to savour.
