Jost Capito leaves McLaren after just five months as chief executive

McLaren have parted company with Jost Capito just five months after he joined the British team as their chief executive.

Capito, the 58-year-old German, was hired by McLaren's former long-standing chairman Ron Dennis, and started work only in September.

But his position with the team appeared vulnerable after Dennis was placed on gardening leave in November, and replaced by American Zak Brown who joined as McLaren's new executive director.

And McLaren confirmed Capito's departure on Tuesday, citing an inability to find "common ground needed to make the team successful again."

"Jost Capito joined McLaren after four successful years at VW Motorsport, with a strong commitment to bringing success back to McLaren," a spokesperson for the British team said.

"He wanted to build again a winning team and fully focus on making the McLaren Formula One car competitive, with the aim of winning World Championships in coming years.

"Regrettably, we have not been able to find common ground with Jost with regard to what is and will be needed to make the team successful again.

"As a result, we have agreed that he will leave McLaren Racing and will now consider other opportunities. We wish him success in his future endeavours."

Dennis, 69, failed in a High Court bid to stop the McLaren board from placing him on gardening leave last year.

Brown and chief operating officer Jonathan Neale have been placed in charge of the day-to-day running of the team.
