Hamilton happy with upgrades

Lewis Hamilton insists Mercedes have adopted a 'quality over quantity' approach to their upgrades ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix.

A number of teams will bring new pieces to the Circuit de Catalunya looking to improve on their performances from the opening four rounds of the season.

But Hamilton won three of those races as he looks to defend the drivers' championship he won in some style last season and is pleased with where Mercedes currently sit in terms of progressing this year's contender.

"We've come with quality upgrades rather than quantity," he said.

"I feel very happy with how it (the season) has gone. I left the last race, sitting on the plane thinking 'wow, it's been a great couple of weeks.'

"When you had a year like last year, to continue with it is not easy, to repeat what you've done before or even do better is not easy. So far I think it's been better than last year. I'm really happy with it.

"I am by no means in the clear, I've got a long way to go and others are working very hard to close that gap. So I've got to really stay on my toes to continue to do, to innovate with things I do on the track, to continue to extract the most from the car."

Like last season, Hamilton's team-mate Nico Rosberg is his closest challenger - despite not taking a victory so far this year.

Having put in a fine display in Bahrain, which he finished third due to a brake issue having battled all afternoon with the Ferrari's, Rosberg wants to return to the top step in Spain as he looks to get his title tilt truly under way.

"It felt like a good race," the German said of his Bahrain display.

"I felt comfortable in the car and of course it's enjoyable to attack like that and pass the red cars (Ferrari) so for sure it's given me a boost coming here to Barcelona.

"It's not really come together until now. Parts have gone well but other parts not so well and I just need to put it all together and of course I'll start to try and do that from here onwards.

"Of course the results speak for themselves, it is pretty clear. For me it is all about Barcelona. It is a race on its own and I come here after a boost from Bahrain. I just want to optimise this weekend and that is it. I'm not thinking much more than that."
