The Chicago Cubs named Rick Renteria their new manager on Thursday, giving the former Padres bench coach his first Major League managerial job.

Renteria agreed to terms on a three-year contract with club options in 2017 and 2018. He becomes the Cubs' third manager since Lou Piniella retired late in the 2010 season, following brief stints by Mike Quade and Dale Sveum.

Renteria, 51, spent the past six seasons as a member of the San Diego Padres' coaching staff.

Selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first round of the 1980 draft, the former infielder batted .237 in 184 career major league games with the Pirates, Mariners and Marlins. He retired as player in 1996.
