Americans dominated the first round of the Senior Open at Carnoustie with Woody Austin leading the way.

The 52-year-old shot a four-under 68 to lead by one from compatriots Tom Byrum, Scott McCarron, Joe Durant, Mark O'Meara, Paraguay's Carlos Franco, Mexican Esteban Toledo and Australian Peter Fowler.

Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez, who finished joint 18th at last week's 145th Open Championship, carded a two-under 70 - which included an eagle at the par-five 14th - to sit tied for ninth.

Germany's Bernhard Langer, looking for a third Senior Open title, lies a shot further back.

Former eight-time European number one Colin Montgomerie, who a week ago was given the honour of hitting the first tee shot for The Open at his own club Royal Troon, had a 76.
