Late struggle costs Dru Love as he misses the cut in The RSM Classic

Dru Love paid for a poor finish to his second round as he failed to make the cut on his PGA Tour debut at The RSM Classic.

The 21-year-old son of Davis Love III made a solid start in his first round, matching his father with an even-par 70.

However, he found things tougher in the second round at the Plantation Course at Georgia's Sea Island.

He looked a likely qualifier at three under par with only seven holes to play - but he played them in seven over, closing with a pair of double bogey s for a 42 on the front nine and a 76 to miss the cut, which his father made after a second round of 70.

Fellow American Kevin Chappell took over at the top of the leaderboard, with a second round five under par 65 on the Seaside Course giving him a single shot lead.

The 29-year-old is still seeking his first win in 143 starts on the tour but he was given hope by his second round display, the highights of which were holing a 35-foot birdie putt early on and a near 50-yard bunker shot for eagle on the 15th.

Chappell found the conditions to his liking, telling pgatour.com: "Weather like this tends to engage me. I felt comfortable with my ball striking.

"I really enjoyed here. It puts me in a good place and excited to be in the position I'm in. It g ives me a lot of momentum going forward."

His 11-under-par score of 131 leaves him a shot clear of Sweden's Freddie Jacobson, who carded a five-under 67 on the Plantation Course, and first round leader Kevin Kisner - an American who had a 67 on the Seaside Course.

Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell, targeting successive victories after his win at Mexico's OHL Classic, had a 68 at Plantation to lie four shots off pace.

English duo Brian Davis and Greg Owen missed the cut.
