Henrik Stenson makes excellent start to second round at Reserva de Marapendi

Open champion Henrik Stenson made a spectacular start to the second round of the Olympic golf tournament despite miserable conditions at Reserva de Marapendi.

Stenson holed from 12 feet for a birdie on the first and 58 feet for another on the second, but looked like giving at least one of those shots back when his tee shot on the next found the water.

However, after taking a penalty drop the 40-year-old Swede simply smashed a fairway wood onto the front edge of the green and amazingly holed from around 100 feet for the most unlikely of pars.

That kept the world number five at seven under par and just a shot behind overnight leader Marcus Fraser, the Australian starting his second round with a par after the heaviest of the rain showers had stopped.

Belgium's Thomas Pieters had moved to within two shots of the lead thanks to birdies on the first two holes, with Justin Rose, Gregory Bourdy and Alex Cejka another shot back.

Rose recorded the first hole-in-one in Olympic history during an opening 67 and had started his second round with four straight pars before picking up a shot on the par-five fifth.
