Hebert squanders hole in one

France's Benjamin Hebert failed to make the most of recording his first hole-in-one on the European Tour as the Volvo China Open headed for a tense climax on Sunday.

Hebert had already carded birdies on the second and sixth in his final round when he holed out with a six iron from 177 yards on the eighth hole at Tomson Shanghai Pudong Golf Club.

That briefly took Hebert to within one shot of the lead, only for the 28-year-old to hook his second shot on the ninth into the water and follow the resulting bogey with further dropped shots on the 13th and 14th.

At four under par Hebert was five shots off the lead held by England's David Howell and China's Wu Ashun, who had shared the overnight lead with defending champion Alexander Levy and 19-year-old home favourite Li Hao-tong.

Levy and Li both bogeyed the first and Howell took the outright lead with a birdie on the second before a bogey on the fourth, while Wu briefly claimed top spot with a birdie on the fifth only for Howell to respond on the sixth.

Both players bogeyed the eighth but Howell birdied the ninth as Wu, in the group ahead, picked up a shot on the 10th to move one ahead of Argentina's Emiliano Grillo, with Li and Thailand's Prom Meesawat another shot back.
