Hardy feels gratitude

Amateur Nick Hardy revealed he had picked up some famous friends after keeping them in the US Open at Chambers Bay.

If Hardy had made par on the final hole of his second round, the cut would have fallen at four over par with exactly 60 players qualifying for the final 36 holes.

However, the 19-year-old from Illinois bogeyed the par-three ninth to take the cut to five over and keep the likes of 2012 winner Webb Simpson, Colin Montgomerie, Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter in the year's second major championship.

"Webb Simpson and his caddie came up to me and then a couple other guys this morning," said Hardy, who carded a third round of 77 on Saturday. "They just joked about it and their caddies joked about it with me in the locker room, too, so it was fun.

"T hey were just goofing off. They were joking around with me, just saying, 'I'll buy you dinner'. I'm like, 'No, that's against NCAA [college] rules'."
