Americans try to claw their way back Saturday at the Ryder Cup as Jim Furyk took a record 16th different partner, Hunter Mahan, into the second morning fourballs match.

Europe, leading 5-3 after Friday's opening matches, will send England's Lee Westwood and Welshman Jamie Donaldson against Furyk and Mahan, part of a revamped lineup for US captain Tom Watson after going winless in Friday foursomes.

Westwood and Donaldson beat Furyk and Matt Kuchar 2-up in Friday afternoon foursomes, boosting Westwood to 5-0 with two halved in all-time pairs play versus Furyk in the rivalry between the nine-time Ryder Cup veterans.

A ninth career fourballs victory would lift Westwood to level second on the all-time list of European wins with Jose Maria Olazabal, one off Ian Woosnam's record.

Mahan has a win and a halve in prior Cup fourballs matches.
