Welshman Jamie Donaldson made his Ryder Cup debut in Friday's opening afternoon foursomes match, joining England's Lee Westwood against Americans Jim Furyk and Matt Kuchar.

None of the four played in the earlier fourball matches.

Furyk, the top-ranked US player at fourth in the world, launched his ninth Ryder Cup with a tee shot into the light rough. The 44-year-old has a record of 4-6 with two halved in 12 prior Ryder Cup foursomes matches.

Westwood, a captain's wildcard pick this year for his ninth Ryder Cup, is the lowest-ranked player in the field at 44th in the world. The 41-year-old is 7-4 with four halved in career Cup foursomes matches.

Donaldson ranks 25th in the world while Kuchar, who ranks ninth, won his lone Cup foursomes match in 2010, joining Stewart Cink in a 1-up win over Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell.
