Various world media are reporting Liverpool and Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez is a major doubt for the World Cup in Brasil, starting June 12th, having injured his meniscus in his knee during training on Wednesday.
The Telegraph states that such an injury, which requires surgery, needs between four to six weeks recovery time, and with England's encounter only 4 weeks away being Uruguay's second game of the tournament, it's not beyond the realms of possibility that Suarez's national team could already be out of the competition even if he recovers in the quickest possible time.
The Daily Mail is at pains to point out that Fernando Torres had the same injury, and it rendered him unable to play for a full seven weeks, which would mean Suarez might make the final, were his team to make it that far. Sky Sports News however, reports that the injury is expected to keep Suarez out for three weeks, substantially less than the Torres injury.
A Uruguay without Suarez would obviously please Roy Hodgson and England, but in terms of the spectacle of the World Cup, it would be a travesty to lose arguably one of the top three players in the world.
The Uruguay Football Federation is expected to make an official statement as to his condition sometime later on Thursday.
