Wigan have been fined £40,000 by the Football Association for breaching agent regulations.

The Latics admitted a charge in relation to their signing of Marc-Antoine Fortune in July, with the conduct of agent Willie McKay going against FA regulations.

The FA confirmed in a statement that an independent regulatory commission hearing had fined the football club, while McKay has "had his overseas agent registration suspended for nine months", with the punishment "stayed for a period of two years".

The FA's statement read: "Wigan Athletic have been fined £40,000, subject to any appeal, after breaching The FA's Football Agents Regulation C10 (a) (i).

"The charge, which the club admitted, relates to agency activity carried out by Willie McKay for Wigan in relation to the signing of Marc-Antoine Fortune.

Wigan, who have also been warned about their future conduct, confirmed they would review the case before deciding whether to appeal or not.

A club statement read: "Further to today's FA statement in relation to a technical breach by the club of The FA's Football Agents Regulation C10(a)(i), Wigan Athletic are aware of the decision and are awaiting the full findings of the Independent Regulatory Commission to enable us to review our position in respect of the decision."

The FA went on to confirm that McKay "will be reported to his licencing National Association (The Scottish FA) for this misconduct".

Fortune, formerly of West Brom, signed a two-year deal at the DW Stadium in the summer and has contributed five goals in 48 appearances during his first season with the club.

He is expected to feature in the end-of-season play-offs, as Wigan look to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
