Why Chelsea should stick with Schurrle instead of signing unproven Cuadrado

Speaking to talkSPORT Mark Langdon has claimed that letting Andre Schurrle leave Stamford Bridge during the January transfer window would be a big mistake on behalf of the Blues.

“It would be a mistake to sell Schurrle. He still has a lot to offer, even off of the bench because that is a specialist role, to come off the bench for half an hour and change a game like he sometimes can” Langdon said.

Considering the impact Schurrle had for Chelsea this past season it would seem that Langdon has a point, even if the attacker’s role for the team is to remain one that starts from the bench. Chelsea have been linked with Fiorentina’s Juan Cuadrado as a replacement. However, though he has shown that he can be a talent based on his performances with Columbia at this past World Cup, he remains unproven in a league that is far beyond the level of physicality and skill as the Serie A at this pint in time. Additionally, Chelsea has just recently let a Belgian attacker, similar to Schurrle, go to Wolfsburg in Germany this past summer. Kevin De Bruyne has since shown his ability, with a quality Wolves side, that is pushing very convincingly for a Champions League spot this season. Langdon agrees.

“Wolfsburg have a lot of money in Germany and are pushing hard for the Champions League, so maybe it would be an attractive option for Schurrle because he would play every week.”

“You've seen it with Kevin De Bruyne, he left Chelsea because he wasn't playing and he has been one of the superstars of this European season.”

I cannot pretend to know what goes on in Jose Mourinho’s mind. That would be insulting. However, I must say that I would keep my faith in a man who has proven that he can be successful in England rather than take a risk on a similar player with no experience who, after watching him several times, can be quite reckless with the ball. But, although Schurrle deserves credit for what he has achieved at Chelsea, no job is safe in West London, at least in the areas that are blue.
