Wales midfielder David Vaughan has retired from international football.

Vaughan was Wales' longest-serving player after making his international debut in a 2-0 away defeat to the United States in May 2003.

The 33-year-old was in the Wales squad that reached the Euro 2016 semi-finals this summer, but he remained an unused substitute throughout the campaign.

But Press Association Sport understands the former Blackpool and Sunderland player has now called time on international football to focus on his club career at Nottingham Forest.

Wales manager Chris Coleman was due to name his squad on Wednesday morning for the opening World Cup qualifier against Moldova in Cardiff on September 5.

As well as Vaughan, injured midfielders Aaron Ramsey and Jonathan Williams were due to be missing from those in France this summer.

Newcastle defender Paul Dummett, Cardiff midfielder Emyr Huws and Leicester striker Tom Lawrence were expected to be drafted in.
