Valdes set for free move to Liverpool 'before the end of November' with Mignolet under pressure

Former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes is set to join Liverpool before the end of November as Brendan Rodgers continues his search for a new goalkeeper.

The Spaniard, 32, left Barcelona at the end of last season when his contract expired and hasn’t played since March, when he tore his anterior cruciate ligament whilst playing for the Catalan giants in a 3-0 win against Celta Vigo.

This ultimately cost the experienced goalkeeper a place in Vicente Del Bosque’s squad for the 2014 world cup.

In the summer, Valdes was set to join Ligue 1 side AS Monaco in France after reports suggested the Spain International had signed a pre contract agreement in January. The deal was cancelled when boss Leonardo Jardim had worries about Valdes’ fitness after the goalkeeper failed a medical in July.

With the signing of Valdes now imminent it brings big question marks over Simon Mignolet’s future at Anfield. The young Belgian has struggled since his £9 million pound move from Sunderland back in 2013 and in recent weeks has been heavily criticised by pundit Gary Neville.

The former United captain, speaking on Sky Sport’s Monday night football highlighted two errors from last season against Arsenal and Manchester City and then went on to blame the 26 year old for Phil Jagielkas stunning equaliser in the first Merseyside derby of the season.

Neville quoted “I am ready for the pelters that will come my way because this is slightly controversial but I think Mignolet has got to do better.

I think he should save it. I would want my goalkeeper to save it.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher then backed up his former rival by stating:

“I think the best goalkeepers who win big trophies will make big saves at big moments. Up until now he hasn’t made any big saves in his Liverpool career and if that continues I can see Liverpool looking for another goalkeeper.
