United to sign Mats Hummels as Barca concede defeat in signing the defender

Reports in the Metro via daily newspaper Sport suggest that Manchester United have beaten Barcelona in the race to sign the German defender from Borussia Dortmund.

The deal is suggested to be in an advanced stage with a £16m figure set to be agreed at the end of the week. If the claims via the Spanish paper prove accurate then Hummels would be Van Gaals third signing with Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera already having signing. Ed Woodward, vice-chairman has suggested the club were willing to spend big to secure talent:

“We are willing to invest. There is no fixed budget. Financially we are extremely strong and funds are available,” he said.

“Louis is assessing what’s going on and there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes, so watch this space.”

Barcelona are believed to have switched their attention to Jeremy Mathieu of Valencia after having their own attempts fail to land the international.

Despite the assumption that the deal is at an advanced stage it remains to be seen if Manchester United join Barca with failed bids. Borussia have already move to replace the defender by signing Matthias Ginter from Freiburg so the club are in a position to sell.
