UEFA to investigate incidents

UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Feyenoord and Roma for incidents during last week's highly charged Europa League match in Rotterdam.

Hosts Feyenoord will be investigated for alleged racist behaviour as well as the throwing of objects by their fans, while Roma could face punishment for a delayed kick-off and the behaviour of their player Adem Ljajic, whose charge is of "provoking spectators".

The last-32 second leg at De Kuip was marred by crowd trouble and referee Clement Turpin spoke to both managers towards the end of the first half after Roma's Ivory Coast forward Gervinho seemingly had an inflatable banana thrown in his direction from a section of the stadium housing Feyenoord fans.

The match was then suspended for around 15 minutes at the start of the second half as Turpin took the players off the pitch with tensions rising after the official had shown Feyenoord substitute Mitchell Te Vrede a straight red card for a challenge on Kostas Manolas.

A UEFA statement on Monday read: " Disciplinary proceedings have been opened following the UEFA Europa League Round of 32 second-leg match between Feyenoord-Roma, played on 26 February in the Netherlands.

"Feyenoord: Charges: Racist behaviour; Setting off and throwing of fireworks and/or objects; Insufficient organization (stairs blocked).

"AS Roma: Charges: Late Kick-off; AS Roma player Ljajic Adem - Provoking spectators."

Roma's case will be dealt with by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body on March 4, with Feyenoord's on March 19.

Roma won the second leg 2-1 with goals from Ljajic and Gervinho to progress through to the last 16 3-2 on aggregate.
