Tottenham fans applauded by CSKA supporters following Champions League tie

Tottenham supporters were applauded by CSKA Moscow fans after the teams' Champions League tie on Tuesday as fears of violence around the match proved unfounded.

This was the first time an English club had visited Russia since fans of the two countries clashed at Euro 2016, but there was no repeat of the chaos in Marseille, as around 250 Spurs supporters watched their team beat CSKA 1-0 without trouble.

The only minor disruption occurred at a game between the clubs' academy sides earlier on Tuesday when two CSKA fans attempted to pull down a Tottenham flag. The offenders, however, were swiftly removed from the ground and the incident quickly resolved.

"Everything was brilliant," said Spurs fan Gary Parker. "Some fans were clapping us and saying well done for travelling so fareveryone was really friendly."

The majority of Tottenham fans heeded advice to keep a low profile by not wearing club colours or displaying banners or flags until inside the stadium.

They had to wait until the 71st minute for Son Heung-min's winner as Spurs held on for their first win of the campaign, which sees them move up to second in Group E.

"I'm very pleased, it's great that everyone is talking about the football," said Martin Cloake, co-chair of the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Trust.

"I was in touch with a couple of people in Moscow - they had plenty of time to look around the city and got a very friendly response from people wherever they went."
