Top 6 : David Moyes Replacements at Manchester United

22 April 2014 09:20

With the rumoured impending sacking of David Moyes the speculation now turns to who be the next person to take the reins at Old Trafford.

Lets take a look at six of the top candidates.

Jurgen Klopp

Aside from the results one of the big reasons that David Moyes got the sack was that he didn't play the “Manchester United way”.

Ideas such as club identity are of course nebulous but at a minimum the manager of Manchester United is expected to play an attacking game that imposes itself on the opposition.

Jurgen Klopp would do this. At Dortmund Klopp played attacking attractive successful football. What is more he did this whilst operating on a tight budget as he haemorrhaged his best players to Bayern Munich.

With Manchester United reportedly sitting on a huge £200 million war chest it would be fascinating to see how Klopp would spend such an eye-watering sum of cash.

Ryan Giggs

It would be a bold appointment to make a rookie managers first job the Manchester United hotseat but nobody knows that club better than Giggs who has played over 900 games for the Red Devils winning a huge haul of trophies.

Giggs would have the backing of the fans and the respect of the players. If the club are thinking long term then they could find a better candidate then such an exalted servant.

Would it be wise to trust someone who has never managed before with the task of rebuilding Manchester United though?

Roberto Martinez

When Martinez was made Everton manager a year ago plenty of people including me scoffed at the appointment. Afterall Wigan had been perennial relegation battlers who eventually did go down.

In his year at Everton however, Martinez has silenced all the doubters. Everton are chasing Champions League football playing aggressive attacking football and are doing it with a side that is patched up with at least four loan players.

More than this Martinez has just beaten convincingly both Manchester United and Arsenal at home.

Perhaps the biggest stumbling block is whether Manchester United would hesitate to appoint another Everton manager to the Old Trafford chair.

Diego Simeone

Not since Mourinho has a manager burst onto the scene quite so spectacularly as Deigo Simeone.

The Argentine has guided Atletico Madrid into the Champions League semi-final and the top of La Liga breaking the Real Madrid/Barcelona duopoly despite having a fraction of the resources.

The drive and passion he instils in his team is reminiscent of Ferguson. He could be the ideal manager to instil some passion into the Manchester United dressing room.

Carlo Ancelotti

If Real Madrid don't win the Champions League and/or La Liga the Spanish club could very easily fire Ancelotti such is the cut throat nature of football.

If this happens Manchester United could do much worse than look to the Italian who has picked up trophies throughout Europe managing successfully at the highest level at huge clubs for decades.

Ancelotti has the proven trophy winning experience that could make him the ideal man to bring Manchester United back to title competitiveness ASAP.

Sir Alex Ferguson

Come on you know you're thinking about this. You know it makes sense.
