Sullivan targets ambitious boss

West Ham co-chairman David Sullivan says the club is attracting a calibre of manager that would not have been interested in the job five years ago.

Just minutes after losing at Newcastle in the final game of the season, the Hammers announced the wholly-expected decision to part company with Sam Allardyce.

That exit, along with Europa League qualification starting on July 2, means the east London club are having to work harder than usual in the immediate aftermath of the campaign.

Former West Ham defender Slaven Bilic is the bookmakers' favourite to take the post and Sullivan has pledged to appoint an "ambitious manager".

"I am dedicating every waking minute to recruiting the best available manager to drive our club forwards," he said in a post on the club's official website, www.whufc.com.

"It is a constantly changing landscape but we are being absolutely thorough in our search, by speaking to representatives of a number of managers and doing our own due diligence on each one.

"Given that, I am not expecting us to make an appointment for at least a week as we must do everything we can to get this appointment right.

"What is clear from our discussions so far is that this job is attracting names it wouldn't have done five years ago.

"When you combine our move to one of the best stadiums in Europe in 16 months' time with the board's ambitious vision and significant transfer budget you have an extremely exciting prospect for the right man.

"In addition, I continue to work with our player recruitment team to identify players to improve the squad.

"We hope to announce our first signing in the next 24 hours and follow that up with a big name in the next two-three weeks."
