Strootman will not be the most expensive player in world football for United

Not so long ago the powers that be said that money was no object for Louis van Gaal to build a world-beating squad of players at Old Trafford.

Kevin Strootman has been of the players linked strongly with a move to United where he could link-up with fellow Dutch players and former amanger. Before his injury issue the player was a key player for Holland and was a strong influence on Roma’s success in finishing second in Serie A.

Now some crazy things have been quoted regarding a possible fee to lure Roma into selling their prized asset and of course the bar will be set very high, especially you would say with Manchester United suggesting that no player was beyond their scope.

The two teams met of course at the weekend as part of both clubs pre-season tour with the Roma manager ‘helping’ Manchester United approach the matter by being in the same ball park. Sky among other reporting the coach suggesting with a smile that 100 million Euros should help van Gaal in his quest to sign the midfielder:

"What can I say about the rumours (about Strootman joining United)." Garcia pondered with a smile after Roma's 3-2 defeat to United on Saturday.

"Maybe after a three-digit offer (i.e. 100 million euros (£79m)), then we will sit down and think about it."

Strootman himself missed the match in Denver as he continues with his ACL injury sustained in March and ruling him out of the World Cup. His recovery is going well according to Rudi Garcia, his manager:

"Kevin is following a normal recovery programme. He is fine. He will start running soon."

Rudi Garcia wasn’t being completely serious but his statement does illustrate that Roma want to hold onto the player who was so important to them last season. The proud Roma squad is young and exciting, enjoyed finishing the season with a club record 85 points and are now going places. Selling a top player like Kevin Strootman would look bad for the fans and potentially end a promising recovery back to the top before it even started.

The former Dutch manager was more pragmatic saying that the players injury was being monitored, suggesting that they are interested but not interested in paying millions to transfer a player returning from serious injury. So Strootman will unlikely be the EPL’s first £100m player, he is good, but untested and currently injured.
