Shrewsbury Town vs Cambridge United match preview

Cambridge United will be looking to put this week behind them with a decent result away to top of the table Shrewsbury Town.

A 3-0 defeat to York on Tuesday night lead to United boss Richard Money hitting out at the efforts of the defence but in the latest interview with BBC Cambridgeshire Sport he admitted "The group of defenders we have, in the main, have never played in the League before. They have been on a massive learning curve. There's no doubt people will grow from the experience, but while you're gaining that experience sometimes it can be a little bit painful."

There is very little doubt that aside from the defensive problems that United are currently experiencing they are missing injured striker Tom Elliott, who hasn't played since last months 2-0 defeat to Plymouth. The bad news for Cambridge is that Money has admitted he doesn't know how long Elliott will be out for. Rory Gaffney and Matteo Lanzoni are also out while Johnny Hunt is unlikely to play.

Despite this, there is some good news for the squad with Luke Chadwick likely to make a welcome return after missing the last few games with an ankle injury.

With Elliott out for the time being there is also a good opportunity for recent singing Jordan Slew to make an impact; In a recent interview he admitted that his hopes for the season would see United stay up, but he added "I'm very ambitious and I want to play at the highest level possible and I think the club will be of the same mind."

Shrewsbury Town boss Micky Mellon is aware that United could cause problems, despite his team sitting at the top of the table. "Cambridge are a very well-organised team. Every game in this league is very difficult and if we do not hit the intensity levels we lessen our chances of winning games." he said.

Shrewsbury have won 70% of their home games this season but despite being current league leaders, they were beaten at home by Northampton, it will be a tough challenge for United but they do go in to the game with the joint-third best goalscoring record in the division, so if everything else can click in to place, who knows. an upset could be possible!
