Akpa Akpro stuns Shakers

Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro grabbed a hat-trick as Shrewsbury maintained their blistering home form by impressively beating high-flying Bury 5-0.

Shrewsbury were totally dominant and would not look back once Akpa Akpro was picked out by Connor Goldson's searching pass to fire a low shot to the far corner of the net as early as the third minute.

Only a flying save from goalkeeper Rob Lainton from Goldson's header denied Shrewsbury a second shortly afterwards.

But it was merely delaying the inevitable as skipper Goldson powered in a header from Bobby Grant's near-post corner to double the advantage in the 20th minute.

Shrewsbury continued to surge forward and increased their lead to 3-0 in the 35th minute when a fine cross from James Collins from the right was headed in at the far post from close range by an unmarked Akpa Akpro.

Frenchman Akpa Akpro, who failed to score during a loan spell at Bury last season, completed his hat-trick six minutes into the second half when he swept in a pass from James Wesolowski.

Bury hardly threatened on a night they will want to quickly forget and conceded a fifth in the 73rd minute when substitute Jordan Clark cleverly flicked in a cross from Ryan Woods.

Shrewsbury have now won their last three league games to climb to fifth in the table.
