Sergio Aguero has been ruled out of Argentina's forthcoming World Cup qualifying double-header against Uruguay and Venezuela due to a calf injury, the country's football association has announced.

The Manchester City striker came off in the 88th minute of Sunday's 3-1 Premier League win against West Ham at the Etihad Stadium.

The Argentinian Football Association said in a statement on its official website that the 28-year-old picked up a calf problem during the game that had ruled him out of the home clash with Uruguay on Friday and the match in Venezuela the following Wednesday.

Aguero was also at the centre of controversy on Sunday after he appeared to flick an elbow at West Ham's Winston Reid.

There was no action taken at the time by referee Andre Marriner, but the incident could lead to a retrospective punishment for Aguero that could see him suspended for City's derby clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford that comes after the international break.

The Football Association will await Marriner's report before deciding whether to take action against Aguero.
