Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini could be banned for life - Q&A

Michel Platini and Sepp Blatter could be facing lifetime bans from football if corruption charges against the pair are proven.

Blatter and Platini both deny wrongdoing and are under temporary 90-day suspensions from FIFA, with formal hearings due to take place later this month.

Here, Press Association chief sports reporter Martyn Ziegler answers key questions:

Is it true Michel Platini and Sepp Blatter could be banned for life?

Yes it looks that way. Platini's lawyer has confirmed that is the recommendation of FIFA's ethics investigators and it is believed a similar sanction has been recommended for Blatter.

What is the likelihood of that happening?

FIFA's ethics judge Hans-Joachim Eckert has to be convinced that the two have committed a corruption offence. Even if they are cleared of that charge there are several other offences which would carry bans of several years.

What are these other offences?

There are charges of four ethics code breaches: mismanagement, conflict of interest, false accounting and non co-operation with or criticising the ethics committee.

Are these all related to the famous £1.3million payment to Platini?

Yes, this is the payment made by FIFA to Platini in 2011 - he says as part of an oral agreement made with Blatter 13 years earlier.

Is there any way back for Platini to run for the FIFA presidency?

He is innocent until proven guilty of course - but his chances look increasingly slim.
