Rugby union referee Nigel Owens has suggested footballers who dive should be cited.

Hull midfielder Robert Snodgrass apologised and admitted the incident that led to the hosts' controversial opener in the 3-3 Premier League draw against Crystal Palace was ''never a penalty."

Owens, who has previously hit out at the unacceptable behaviour of top footballers and managers towards officials in the sport, chose BBC Radio 5 Live to air his thoughts on Saturday evening.

The Welsh official expanded on his thoughts on the 606 show, after tweeting: "Bring in citing for it after the match. Like rugby has on foul play. Suspension if guilty."

Owens said: " Those people who tend to dive are the ones who score the goals and if you lose your best scorer for a couple of games then it's pointless having him in the club because he's not playing enough games."

Owens, now 45, took charge of the World Cup final between New Zealand and Australia at Twickenham last October.

He added: "Rugby can't take the moral high ground because there are a lot of things it could do better.but it has cleaned up a lot.

"There are a lot more natural stoppages in rugby union while football is a fast moving game.

"Rugby has issues and needs to do better and it can learn from football - but it deals with issues of foul play and swearing that football doesn't at the moment."
