Roger Schmidt hails striker Javier Hernandez ahead of Champions League clash

Monaco host Bayer Leverkusen at Stade Louis II on Tuesday night bidding to build upon their opening Champions League win over Tottenham at Wembley.

Ligue 1 side Monaco began their Group E campaign with a 2-1 win over Spurs in the Premier League side's European home.

Leverkusen, meanwhile, relinquished a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with CSKA Moscow, who host Spurs in the group's other tie on Tuesday evening.

A 3-2 Bundesliga win over Mainz, with a hat-trick from Javier Hernandez, has boosted confidence for Leverkusen.

And coach Roger Schmidt has warned Monaco of the potency of Mexico striker Hernandez, who has scored 21 goals in 32 league games for Leverkusen since signing from Manchester United in 2015.

Schmidt said: "That's just him. If he has chances, he takes the shot and there is a good chance he will score."

Another former Manchester United striker could be a doubt for Monaco.

Colombia striker Radamel Falcao is back in the Principality after a season-long loan at Old Trafford and another at Chelsea.

Falcao missed Saturday's Ligue 1 win over Angers after sustaining a head knock against Nice the prior Wednesday, so could be absent again.

The 4-0 defeat at Cote d'Azur rivals Nice ended Monaco's seven-match winning sequence.

But Leonardo Jardim's side are unbeaten in their last seven home games in Ligue 1, with six wins, and will hope to carry the momentum from that form into the Leverkusen clash.

Some of the responsibility for stopping Hernandez will fall to Poland centre-back Kamil Glik.

Glik, a summer signing from Torino, was praised for his performance in the 2-1 win over Angers.

Jardim said: "Defenders have a responsibility to defend but they are also able to attack.

"He is a different player to the kind we normally sign. He is mature and is a Polish international. He is an important player."

It is two years since the sides last met in the Champions League group stages, when Monaco won both home and away ties. The teams also met in 1997 in the group stage, when Monaco won at home and drew in Germany.
