Jamie Redknapp has lauded Fulham star Clint Dempsey as “the best American to have played over here” following his superb brace against Wigan Athletic on Saturday.
Although Dempsey is in pretty good company in terms of transatlantic imports to the Premier League, with the likes of Aston Villa’s Brad Friedel, Everton’s Tim Howard and Wolves’ Marcus Hahnemann following in the footsteps of Brian McBride, Landon Donovan, Kasey Keller and Claudio Reyna, who all enjoyed successful spells in England with Fulham, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City amongst other clubs, Redknapp suggests the 27-year-old Craven Cottage talisman is right up there with the best of them.
Redknapp told the Daily Mail: “Clint Dempsey is the best American to have played over here.
“Consistently, he performs well, scores goals and can either lead the line, play deeper, or play wide.
“He scored two on Saturday in a big win for Mark Hughes and Fulham. He is trying to make them more adventurous, but they had slipped towards the wrong end, and Dempsey won them three points.”
Dempsey moved to the Premier League in January 2007 from MLS outfit New England Revolution, and has since established himself as a mainstay in Fulham’s starting eleven.
